Plot editor and narrative timeline: designing the story
A plot editor does two things a blank page cannot: it lets you see the story before you write it and check its narrative timeline once it is written. This guide explains the method and how ChronoEditor applies it with Plot Studio, AI Plot and manuscript analysis. It complements narrative analysis and how to assess a manuscript.
What a plot editor is
A plot editor is a space where the elements of the story — events, turning points, dramatic questions, states of the world — become objects you can handle: cards you can move, link and order. The benefit is immediate: if an event has no consequences, or if two turning points say the same thing, you see it in the structure before you see it in the text.
The underlying principle: plot is the chain of consequences, not the calendar. A useful plot editor therefore works on dramatic units, not on chapters.
Multi-track timeline: simultaneous events
Most stories are not a row of events: they are a weave of lines advancing together. ChronoEditor's narrative timeline arranges the cards on tracks (narrative lines) and slots: the same slot on different tracks means simultaneous events. So you see at a glance:
- where a character is missing (an empty track for too many slots);
- which setups have no payoff;
- which subplots remain isolated from the rest.
In ChronoEditor every card has a type (event, turning point, force, question, state of the world, inciting incident, point of no return, twist, revelation, climax, resolution, stakes, injustice, betrayal, sacrifice, redemption, theme), an intensity from 1–10 and the characters involved; the relationships between cards (setup/payoff/cause/effect) make the links explicit.
Building the plot from scratch (Plot Studio)
Plot Studio is the plot editor of ChronoEditor. The flow is that of a playwright:
- Add tracks and slots for the structure you plan (main events, character development, subplots).
- Create the cards by dragging them between slots; if the slot is taken, the cards swap places.
- Link setup and payoff, cause and effect, so that the narrative promises are tracked.
- Write the synopsis at the top of the board: it remains the overall vision of the story.
You do not have to fill in everything: the value comes from seeing the shape — arcs, gaps, payoffs — before you write.
AI Plot: a complete plot from a description
If you prefer to start from a base, AI Plot (50 credits) generates a complete plot from genre, mood, theme, setting and protagonist: characters with wants and fears, an extended synopsis and cards already spread across several tracks, with type, intensity and relationships. The result is normalised in the editor: you can refine it, move the cards and finally export it to the editor to write and analyse the text.
The AI proposes the structure; the decisions — where the turning point falls, what stays open — remain yours.
The manuscript timeline, not only the plot's
When the text exists, the analysis reconstructs the real timeline of events: key events in narrative order, with participants, place and moment. It is the same principle of the plot editor applied to what has been written: inciting incident, complications, point of no return, climax, resolution, and the points to verify emerge.
The Continuity check (8 credits) flags possible contradictions between events — times, places, presences — so that you can verify them against the manuscript. It is a support to reading, not a verdict.
Plot Studio and analysis together
The complete loop: design in Plot Studio (or start from AI Plot) → export to the editor → write → analyse the text → go back to the plot to fix the structure. The plot remains the map; the analysis is the check on the road. The Visual Board (moodboard) adds the visual level: faces, places and objects with captions and stickers, to keep the mood consistent.
Common mistakes when designing a plot
- Filling a single track: the story loses room to breathe; you need several parallel tracks.
- Turning points without intensity: if everything weighs the same, nothing surprises.
- Setups without payoff: open promises must be closed or consciously left open.
- Confusing narrative order and chronology: flashbacks are not timeline mistakes.
- Treating the AI as the author: AI Plot produces a structure to be judged.
In summary
A plot editor and a narrative timeline make the mechanics of the story visible: events, tracks, promises and payoffs. ChronoEditor offers them with Plot Studio, AI Plot, the analysis of the manuscript timeline and the continuity check — from the first idea to the verification on the text.
Give the story its shape before you write it. Open Plot Studio or generate a complete plot with AI Plot, then export it to the editor.
